Savings bank looks to help food bank

AUGUST 14, 2015
PARAMUS – Hudson City Savings Bank has launched a month-long food drive to benefit the Center for Food Action, which has been struggling to keep up with increased seasonal demand.

The center, which has eight locations in Bergen and Passaic counties, distributes about 1,700 emergency food packages every month.

Summer is generally a difficult time for it and other food pantries, as the need for assistance tends to rise, in part because children from low-income families are not getting free meals at school.

At the same time, donations usually go down in the summer, according to local pantry officials.

Lisa Calligan, who works in Hudson City's appraisal department, said she had the idea for a food drive after reading an article in The Record about these difficulties. The thought of children possibly missing meals affected her, she said.

"It just touches your heart," she said. "It's horrible."

She initially planned to put out a box for donations at the bank's corporate office in Paramus, but when she ran the idea by the company's chief executive officer, Denis Salamone, she says he encouraged her to go further.

So rather than just one box in Paramus, food and monetary donations are instead being collected at all of the bank's branches in Bergen and Passaic counties.

The drive will run through the end of the month, and the bank has pledged to match all food donations as well as any money given by bank employees.

Recommended donations are: canned meat, tuna, chicken, vegetables, fruit and hearty soups; macaroni and cheese; peanut butter; jelly; cereal; dry milk; instant potatoes; juice (100 percent only); baby formula; diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6; soap; dental hygiene products, and supermarket gift cards.
